Craft Barter Exchange To Pay For Services Or Products
When I started my business I didn't have a big budget for advertising, but it was obviously necessary, so I would seek out other small businesses where I could make contact directly with the owner to discuss the option of paying for advertising not in cash or on credit, but with products of mine to the value of the service.
For example, we have a local A5 booklet dropped in our mail boxes once monthly which is purely advertising - the first half is devoted to home improvement services, and the second half to other local products and services, which I noticed also included advertising for craft and handmade items. I picked up the phone and contacted the company who prints and distributes the booklet, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was all run by one woman, so we started chatting... I ended up with a full color half page ad which was very successful, and which ended up costing me less than half the full price!
You see, the beauty of barter exchanging your products for services is that you're trading them at their retail value, but that's not what they're costing you to make them!
Craft barter exchanges can be used to pay for many different services which can either help boost your business, such as advertising, or services/products which are just necessary, such as getting business cards printed.
Whether you have the budget for these things or not, always try to negotiate a barter exchange wherever you possibly can - you will save a lot in the long run, which can then be put towards more advertising or promotional activities.
Craft Barter Exchange To Boost Sales
Upselling is a term you should be familiar with (if not, go research it now!) and is usually limited to your own products, but let's do some thinking outside the box...
If you find someone who sells products that are complimentary to yours, they can work well as good incentives for upsells - here's an example:
You have a booth at a craft fair or market, and a customer is admiring your handmade jewelry. She'd really love to go home with your beautiful (most expensive) jeweled necklace, which she knows is going to match her evening gown just perfectly, but she's hesitating because of the price.
You, however, have barter traded with a crafter who makes handmade purses - for just this reason! You approach your prospective customer and suggest that if she'd like to purchase that necklace, you'll also let her have this lovely evening purse which matches the colors of the necklace fabulously... sold!
There are many other examples - offering free fancy gift packaging or handmade greeting cards if the item is being bought as a gift; a free dining table candle if someone is buying handmade napkin rings, or vice versa; even seasonal promotions such as free Christmas tree decorations with something purchased at that time of year.
Use your imagination to find items that are complimentary to yours, and when you introduce the idea of doing a barter exchange with another crafter s/he will probably thank you for sharing the idea too!

Keeping Your Sanity As A New Year School Year Starts

Like a lot of you mother’s right now, my kids are putting the finishing touches on getting ready for the new school year. Checking their backpacks to make sure they have everything ready for school. Pondering over what outfit to wear on that first day, and where their classes are located. As this week has progressed I have realized, not only does the kids going back to school stress me out but my kids also. So I thought I would share some great tips to help you keep your sanity while we try to get back into the swing of school life again.
It is that time of year again where we have to role out our appointment books to mark all the children’s after school activities, and the kids school schedules and the parent and teacher meetings. Sometimes it can seem very overwhelming, especially when you have more than one child to get ready for the school year.
One of the biggest tips I have learned through trial and error in raising my children, is being organized is an absolute must, While I was doing all the school supply shopping for own kids, I also purchase a few items to help me keep track of our lives to help me keep my sanity.
Items we purchase:
Purse size agenda or calendar
Wall Mount Calender
Dry Erase Markers and Eraser
One of the best tools we have in our home is our Wall mounted calendar in our kitchen, With this calendar we keep track of the kids sports and games, early dismals or school meetings and so much more. I keep a small dish on our counter top with four colored dry erase markers in it, Each person is assigned a color so if they need to add activity to our calendar we knew who’s writing it was. Every Sunday I will take my purse size calendar and compare it to the Wall Mounted Calender so I know that our calendars match and I know where I have to be for each day of the upcoming week.
Next to our Calender I have Two paper hanging on my wall that show my girls chores charts for the week. Now my girls are 10 and 15 so obvisouly they have more chores than a child say starting kindergarten., But I have learned through running my own home daycare and also teaching preschool that a child from the age of 4 years and older should have a chore chart to help your child feel a sense of responsibility. When my children come home they immediately grab themselves a snack and rest for a short period then it is off to chores and homework. They know if they plan on playing with the neighborhood kids or visiting friends that the chores and homework have to be completed first.
Another tradition we have developed in our home is to set aside two nights a week that is strictly FAMILY NIGHT which I know can be hard in a busy household. Especially with everyone running in different directions, but on family night not only do we all eat together and discuss the days events but afterwards we either watch a movie together or play a board game or go for a walk. Just to allow us time to connect together as a family at least for couple nights out of the week.
On the weekends I try to plan our menu for the week according to what our schedule looks like, this not only helps in our grocery shopping by allowing us to only buy the items we will be needing instead of ton of extra junk food but this also allows me a easy to look at menu to see what I will be cooking for each night. Now there are times where we may switch a meal to a different night but the menu is a nice outline for our family, If I plan on having any meals that are very time consuming I tend to prepare the meals on the weekends, this helps me out a great deal. So that I am not rushing to prepare dinner right after the kids get home, but I can sit down and chat with them about their day they just had.

Fall Candle Decorating
A Treenware Bowl or Prim Bowl
Votive Candles in Fall Scents like Pumpkin or Ginger
Popcorn Kernels in assorted colors
Small mixed nuts and berries
Pine cones and Pine Needles
Essential Oil in a Fall Scent
For a Halloween Decoration you can Use Candy Corn
Simply fill a deep bowl with an assortment of nuts, berries, popcorn kernels, pine cones, pine needles or even fall dried flowers. Next add an assortment of Fall Scented Candles into your bowl. You can use clear glass candle holders if choose or leave your candles floating in your Fall Mixture. Next add a few drops of your favorite essential oils in the fall mixture to add wonderful aroma and scent throughout your house. This is super simple decorating idea and you can even change your fall mixture to a candy corn mixture to adapt your candle decoration to blend into the Halloween season.
With Apple Picking Season Fast upon us I thought I would share some easy Apple Craft Recipes I shared the Apple Wreath last year and I will touch base on this again. Apples are not only a wonderful edition to your Fall Menu planning but they can add a wonderful and beautiful touch to your home décor also.
Simple Apple Potpourri
Lemon Juice
Apple Slices
Cinnamon Ground
Cinnamon Sticks
Cut 8-10 Medium Apples into slices leaving the seeds in tack. Next pour Lemon Juice over your apples in a bowl, allow them to soak in the Lemon Juice for about 5-10 minutes and then layout on paper towls to dry. Next in a bowl coat well with ground cinnamon and you can even use a little sugar to give your apples a wonderful aroma then place them onto a cookie sheet and place in your oven at 200 degrees for 5 minutes to speed up the drying process. Next just add your apples slices to a Treenware or Primitive bowl and you can add cinnamon sticks for decorations and even dried flowers to add a little contrasting color.

Gingham Fabric
Prepare your apple slices are you did above slicing them and baking them in the oven. Now just add your slices to your Heavy Gauge Wire and fill up your wire to the desired length you are looking for. Then using your pliers fasten the ends of your wire together and you can share and bend your wire into either a circle or heart shape. Next using your gingham fabric you can either fill in gaps with bows or add a hanger for your wreath by using gingham ribbon on the top of your wreath! Now you have beautiful and fun and easy to make wreath that will leave a wonderful aroma of Apples and Cinnamon throughout the Fall Season.
Another easy adaption to the apple wreath that my daughters and I did last year was to simply make apple garland by stringing your apple slices onto the wire then adding gingham bows through the wire. We also added cinnamon sticks for a decorative flair and then I hung this from my fireplace. It made a beautiful garland and was so inexpensive to make and my kids had a blast helping me create these. Remember not only are apples yummy and wonderful in apple pies but by using a little creativity and items you have around your home they can become a wonderful craft projects also!

Our featured crafter for April is Lisa of Primsy Doodle Designs.

What is the name of your online businesses?
Primsy Doodle Designs, Primsy Graphics Club, and Primitive Plug Mart
When did you first open your first online business?
I opened my first online business Kaitlynn’s Kottage Graphics Shoppe in 2002
During a typical week how many hours do you work on your sites?
I work 70-80 hours per week on my sites and I love every minute of it.
What motivated you to open a business in the crafting community?
I had two babies within 12 months and had to find a way to work and stay home with them. I was already dabbling in Paint Shop Pro and I come from a very artistic family so opening a graphics business was the obvious answer for me.
What movitated you to go into the crafting and primitive community?
I have always loved crafting and art since I was a small child and fell instantly in love with primitive arts and crafts!
What is one thing you did, that you would advise others NOT to do?
I gave up several times and in the online world of selling, time and persistence
really is the key to success.
Do you have advice for a new crafter just starting out in the Crafting Community?
Yes, be patient and be persistent!
What are your future plans for your business?
I plan to keep expanding my line of clipart and add art prints in the very near future.
Would you like to share a little about your personal life and hobbies?
Sure. I Have 5 children,2 cats and one golden retriever!I live in a college town in
mid-Missouri. I am engaged to be married in July of 2007.My children and I love to spend as much time as possible outdoors swimming,hiking and visiting parks and lakes! I also love to read romance novels and watch American Idol!

Meet Our Newest Editor - Denise Bailey (aka NeeNee) from KKL Primitives
As mentioned in our previous post we have two brand new editors at Primitive Times Magazine - Kassy from Prim Country Market and Denise Bailey from KKL Primitives. Both individuals are very talented and creative business women and we are thrilled to have both of them as contributing editors.
We already told you about Kassy from Prim Country Market. Now we'd like to tell you about Denise Bailey (aka NeeNee) from KKL Primitives.
Denise is affectionately called NeeNee by all her online friends and she has been on a whirlwind of activity during the last year. NeeNee has set-up so many blogs and websites that she's giving both Angie and I a run for our money. Personally, I think she's got her eye on my "The Blogging Queen" crown. But, she'll have to fight Angie for it first. Then again, she may just have to fight me for it. I'm not sure I'm ready to give it up yet. Hmmm.....
Denise has accomplished quite a lot in the past year. Between websites, crafting, blogging, traveling, and her family she's had a lot to do. I'd suggest that she take a break, but I'm afraid Mrs. Hyde will appear.
You see, Mrs. Hyde is NeeNee's alter ego on her "Menopausal Monster" blog and she can be very devious at times. If you are of the "menopausal" age then you definitely want to bookmark NeeNee's "Menopausal Monster" blog. It's hilarious. NeeNee always adds her comic touch to every article and is a very talented and gifted writer.
But, NeeNee has a lot more going on than just her "Menopausal Monster" blog. She has her main website KKLPrimitives which sells primitive & country handcrafted dolls and decor and her eBay website The Krazy Kraft Lady which sells crafts and collectibles.
She also is an accomplished blogger. I already mentioned her "Menopausal Monster" blog above which is "A Day In The Life Of A Menopausal Woman" Well, she has many more than just that. There's her main blog called The Krazy Kraft Lady which has all sorts of posts about NeeNee's various crafting projects and dolls. Did I mention she was a gifted crafter and doll maker?
Then there's her KKL Graphics blog which contains all sorts of wonderful FREE graphics and FREE tutorials. Did I mention NeeNee was a talented graphic artist?
Then there's her KKL Kreations blog which offers "Free & Low Cost Advertising Options." Did I mention that NeeNee has wonderful ideas for helping small business crafters to promote their businesses?
She also has a KKL Kreations2 website that also offers "Free & Low Cost Advertising, free graphics, websets, & more."
And, if all of that isn't enough - she has her Unique Boutique Group which is an MSN group where you can "Create Your Own Graphics", her Tubes4Us Group which has free PSP Tubes, and her Neenee's Tubes- PSP Tube Depot where you can get "Free PSP Tubes created by Neenee." Did I happen to mention that NeeNee is a gifted artist?
I told you that NeeNee was a whirlwind of activity last year - didn't I?
Here's what NeeNee had to say about herself:
I'm a 54 year old wife, mom and gramma from Western Pennsylvania. I've been married to my soul mate for 33 years, we have 3 beautiful grown daughters ages 33, 30 and 25 and 3 gorgeous grandbabies, ages 7 years, 3 years and 2 months.
I've loved to craft ever since I was a child, and as a young mom I would craft things for myself, family and friends. I was bit by the primitive bug two years ago and ventured into selling my crafts at local craft shows. This area however, doesn't seem to appreciate primitive crafts like I do, so I came to the www to see if I could reach a larger audience. I opened my eBay Store, The Krazy Kraft Lady and haven't done too badly, and by accident came across a Prim crafting forum where most everyone had an online store. I wanted one too! I opened my little shoppe, KKL Primitives in April of 2006 and while I have sold a few things, I've not yet hit the big time, lol.
The other editors and I are thrilled to have NeeNee as a new contributing editor. She has a terrific sense of humor which will fit in really, really well with the terrific group of editors we have on Primitive Times Magazine.

We already told you about Kassy from Prim Country Market. Now we'd like to tell you about Denise Bailey (aka NeeNee) from KKL Primitives.
Denise is affectionately called NeeNee by all her online friends and she has been on a whirlwind of activity during the last year. NeeNee has set-up so many blogs and websites that she's giving both Angie and I a run for our money. Personally, I think she's got her eye on my "The Blogging Queen" crown. But, she'll have to fight Angie for it first. Then again, she may just have to fight me for it. I'm not sure I'm ready to give it up yet. Hmmm.....Denise has accomplished quite a lot in the past year. Between websites, crafting, blogging, traveling, and her family she's had a lot to do. I'd suggest that she take a break, but I'm afraid Mrs. Hyde will appear.
You see, Mrs. Hyde is NeeNee's alter ego on her "Menopausal Monster" blog and she can be very devious at times. If you are of the "menopausal" age then you definitely want to bookmark NeeNee's "Menopausal Monster" blog. It's hilarious. NeeNee always adds her comic touch to every article and is a very talented and gifted writer.
But, NeeNee has a lot more going on than just her "Menopausal Monster" blog. She has her main website KKLPrimitives which sells primitive & country handcrafted dolls and decor and her eBay website The Krazy Kraft Lady which sells crafts and collectibles.
She also is an accomplished blogger. I already mentioned her "Menopausal Monster" blog above which is "A Day In The Life Of A Menopausal Woman" Well, she has many more than just that. There's her main blog called The Krazy Kraft Lady which has all sorts of posts about NeeNee's various crafting projects and dolls. Did I mention she was a gifted crafter and doll maker?
Then there's her KKL Graphics blog which contains all sorts of wonderful FREE graphics and FREE tutorials. Did I mention NeeNee was a talented graphic artist?Then there's her KKL Kreations blog which offers "Free & Low Cost Advertising Options." Did I mention that NeeNee has wonderful ideas for helping small business crafters to promote their businesses?
She also has a KKL Kreations2 website that also offers "Free & Low Cost Advertising, free graphics, websets, & more."
And, if all of that isn't enough - she has her Unique Boutique Group which is an MSN group where you can "Create Your Own Graphics", her Tubes4Us Group which has free PSP Tubes, and her Neenee's Tubes- PSP Tube Depot where you can get "Free PSP Tubes created by Neenee." Did I happen to mention that NeeNee is a gifted artist?
I told you that NeeNee was a whirlwind of activity last year - didn't I?
Here's what NeeNee had to say about herself:
I'm a 54 year old wife, mom and gramma from Western Pennsylvania. I've been married to my soul mate for 33 years, we have 3 beautiful grown daughters ages 33, 30 and 25 and 3 gorgeous grandbabies, ages 7 years, 3 years and 2 months.
I've loved to craft ever since I was a child, and as a young mom I would craft things for myself, family and friends. I was bit by the primitive bug two years ago and ventured into selling my crafts at local craft shows. This area however, doesn't seem to appreciate primitive crafts like I do, so I came to the www to see if I could reach a larger audience. I opened my eBay Store, The Krazy Kraft Lady and haven't done too badly, and by accident came across a Prim crafting forum where most everyone had an online store. I wanted one too! I opened my little shoppe, KKL Primitives in April of 2006 and while I have sold a few things, I've not yet hit the big time, lol.
The other editors and I are thrilled to have NeeNee as a new contributing editor. She has a terrific sense of humor which will fit in really, really well with the terrific group of editors we have on Primitive Times Magazine.

Meet Our Newest Editor - Kassy from Prim Country Market
We are so excited because we have two new editors at Primitive Times Magazine and they are both exceptional. They are both very talented and creative business women and we are thrilled to have both of them as contributing editors.
Our first new editor is Kassy from Prim Country Market. Our second editor is Denise Bailey (aka NeeNee) from KKL Primitives. This post is about Kassy. Our next post will be about NeeNee.
Kassy is the owner of Prim Country Market which sells primitive crafts, candles, handmade soaps and so much more. They also sell Early American Colonial Supplies~Aging & Staining Solution, Prim Fabric and other primitive needfuls.
Kassy is also the owner of Ravassant Boutigue. Ravissant Boutique sells Victorian and Vintage Style Clothing, Unique Jewelry, All Natural Mineral Makeup and Luxury Skin Care.
She is also the leader of a very successful eBay group called "A Primitive Country Gathering" (APCG). APCG is a group of Primitive Crafters, Candle Makers, Doll Makers and Friends on Ebay.

The Prim Country Market was established in 2004. Specializing in Americana Lighting Tapers and Primitive Colonials. Inspired by early Colonial America, we have expanded our product line to include chunky prim fixins, melting tarts, primitive houseware, prim ornies and bowl fillers, graphics and lots more. Our staff is always looking to create something new and exciting.
We love the olde tattered look of aged cloth, the warm patina of antique wood and the simplicity of a pair of old grungy tallow candles. TPCM transports their customers back into the past, where American history first can alive...a time where little children learned their ABC's by stitching them onto a piece of cloth and handmade soap was made over an open fire. A gentle era and simpler time, long gone but never forgotten. Recreated everyday by The Prim Country Market.

Meet Our Newest Editor Niki Jackson
Welcome to my column, my name is Niki Jackson otherwise known as ‘The Vintage Artist’ and ‘Host of Prim Talk Radio’.
I really love Vintage and Primitive crafting, I came across it about 2 years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. It was also 2 years ago when I started my first online business Cinnamon Creations where I sold my country and primitive crafts. I had dabbled with craft websites before but didn’t get serious till August 2004.
Cinnamon Creations has evolved into The Vintage Artist, I wanted to combine my love for crafts and art in a Vintage style so felt the name change was important.
I have always been a crafter at heart, as a kid I was always making something! So I guess it was fate that I would become “The Vintage Artist”. I am so excited to be a writer here at Primitive Times, I have loved writing just as much as crafting all my life and to get the opportunity to write here is amazing.
People often ask me how Prim Talk Radio came about and so if you are wondering too get comfy and I’ll tell you...
In January this year (2006) there was a lot of talk about podcasting and internet radio shows on the business mentoring group I am a graduate of (Mom Masterminds). This really interested me and it got me thinking about how great it would be to have a show where all we talked about was primitive crafting, how cool that would be! So I started enquiring about how to go about it and before I knew it we were launching.

Meet Our Newest Editor Missy Sue
I have been crafting and creating all my life, although "prim" crafting came into my life about two years ago....and I was obsessed! Primitive crafting has become my favorite creative outlet and I thank my lucky stars everyday I found such a wonderful world of so many endless possibilities! I have an angel of a four year old son who keeps me on my toes everyday here in rural Missouri, he's taught me the most important lessons I'll ever learn. I believe in magic, in the beauty around us and try to capture it everyday in my creations and in my life. I'm as clumsy as an ox and tend not to take things very seriously, I'm silly and superstitous, but most of all I'm a goof.

My name is Lisa Lowell. I live in tiny Brandon, Vermont with my husband and daughter. Our daughter was born in January of 2006. She is the best thing that ever happened to us and is the joy of our lives.
I started my business, Berry Country Crafts, 5 years ago. After doing the craft show circuit for a couple years, I opened my website. My goal was to build a business that would allow me to be a work at home Mom. This year I took over the programming and maintenance of my site. For the time being, I still work outside the home part time taking care of an adult with special needs (who happens to be my younger sister). I am very blessed, as my daughter can come with me to work.
Since my daughter was born, I have been burning the candle late into most nights teaching myself about website management and promotion. My goal has been to learn as much as I can about how to make a site sell without paying out a lot of money. I am hoping to share some of what I have learned with other crafters in the hopes that I may help out other moms, like me, who just want to be at home with their kids and earn some money at the same time.

Meet Our Newest Editor Nancie
I have been married to my wonderful husband Mark for 8 years. We have a great little boy "John" (6 years old) who is his daddy's little man.
We live on 40 acres with several sheep, 2 horses, 6 border collies and 1 pug who is The Speckled Goose's mascot. She works hard every day greeting all of our customers. She would love to meet you too.
I have been crafting for more years than I care to count or admit. The mediums that I currently work with are tole painting, stitching, and crochet to name a few. After I was laid off from my 8-5 day job, I started designing websites and electronic newsletters for local business and crafters, in addition to crafting full time.

Hi...My name is Debbie and I co-own "Two Old Crows" that is named for Dean and I because we are "two", we are "old" get the senior discount at Dennys and we are grumpy. We live in St Louis Missouri with our large airedale "Roxie" . I have two grown children and three grandsons that I adore. Dean and I love scouring flea markets, auctions and estate sales for primitives, vintage collectibles and antiques. Some of these items we sell on our website "Two Old Crows" or our ebay store "Two Old Crows" without doing anything to them while others I turn into one of a kind pieces by folk art painting on them
I am excited about American Folk Art in all mediums but alarmed at how many of our crafts of the past are becoming lost arts. Hi! My name is Dianne; I live in Davison, Michigan with my black cat, Lola, my "nekkid" dog, Agnes, (yes, she's a "bare nekkid" Chinese Crested with just a tuft of hair on the top of her head) and, whichever grandchild happens to be spending the night at Meme`s.
They are accustomed to my strange quirks, and think nothing of me stopping whatever I`m doing to jot down a design that just "popped into my head". Nor, do they miss a snore when I jump out of bed because I thought of something great in my sleep.
I have loved designing ever since I was a little girl. I spent the summer when I was 10 staying with an aunt, and from that time on, if I was dedicated to designing projects of all sorts. She taught me how to crochet, to sew, and to make patterns from old newpapers. We baked, did gardening, everyday was a new adventure. It was a fun time! Though I tried many crafts through the years, I have always come back to stitching and sewing and designing what I was making. Olde-time-stitchin is my dream come true, and I owe all the glory to God, cause through Him all things are possible!

My name is Angie I am a Work At Home Mom from St Louis, MO area. Currently I own several Craft and Country Sites (see links below) and just love the Craft and Country Community!
I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful and talented artists it just amazes me daily! I am a work at home mom to two girls who are the most important thing in my life! One is nine and a "Princess" in every sense of the word lol! My oldest is 14 and starting her teen years LORD HELP ME lol She is very atheletic and soo bright! I am just blessed!
I have been married for fifteen years to the love of my life Chris! He is a Mechanic and works very hard as do I. We were high school sweethearts lol
In addition to our kids we have several pets! We have three cats Midnight, Nikita, and Sara. Each of them with the most diffrent and distinct personality! And then there is the love of my life lol my dog Max he is my baby. He is pathetic lol just a big baby!
I started in the craft community by offering crafts of my own I started selling gift baskets and some handmade unique crafts of my own. That is how I met such wonderful crafters, then I started my first site Heartland Marketplace which has been a huge success!
